 JAPAN MARKETS UPDATE    
Tokyo Falls 2%; Bridgestone, Toyota Decline

Stocks in Japan fell on rising crude oil prices, fears of rising inflation and weak profit outlook from Toyota, Olympus and other companies.

Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo trading fell 2.1% after weak earnings from Bridgestone and weaker outlook from Olympus and Toyota rattled investors. Toyota lowered its net sales and income for the current fiscal year. Bridgestone reported 1% decline in profit. Takeda Pharmaceuticals and Olympus lowered its outlook for the current fiscal year. In stock trading, utilities declined on record crude oil prices. Yokogawa Electric plunged 10% and led decliners in the index.

Toyota Falls 4% on Gloomy Outlook

Toyota offered flat unit sales outlook for the current fiscal year and net income is expected to decline 25%.
Toyota Motor fell in New York trading after it lowered its estimate of sales and earnings for the current fiscal year. For the fiscal year 2008 revenue rose 9.8% and earnings gained 4.5%. Toyota estimates unit sales in the current fiscal year of 8.87 million units compared to 8.69 million units in the year completed in March 2008.

Japan's Consumer Prices Rise in March

The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in April 2008 was 100.8, up 0.3% from the previous month, and up 0.6% over the previous year.
The consumer price index for Japan in March 2008 was 101.0(2005=100), up 0.5% from the previous month, and up 1.2% over the previous year.
